About Asmi

In my practice as a psychologist and in my capacity as a lecturer I have come across a large number of people that turn to psychologists just to get through usual life transitions. Most of my clients need a space where they can express and be heard out. We may write diaries to open out our deepest feelings or talk to someone. Increasingly as we go global, it is harder to find that one person whom we can completely confide in.

This website is an attempt to provide a space for all those that are grappling with the customary issues of life and would just like to lend a voice to their problems, provide an insight into handling change, seeking answers to questions or just wanting to read some typical thoughts on various psychological processes.

I hope that through this website people find a way of expressing their feelings and emotions and becoming more aware of whom they are and stating confidently "Asmi….I am"

Asmi is a Sanskrit word that literally means “am”. If I process a step further, I will take the liberty of adding the word “I” before am and hence say “I am” Together these words are profound and powerful. They bring a sense of ownership to an individual that stems from within. It indicates an awareness of self in all its strengths and limitations. I find this to be a very important aspect of personal growth and development. There can be little external growth without internal awareness. Ever so often we are all in a hurry to change another individual, an environment or a system. We rarely see that urgency to reflect within and change ourselves. Isn’t it said that charity begins at home? If we apply this analogy to adaption and growth, should we not be the first to look within and begin the process of self modification?

If I reflect on my life from childhood through till this stage in my life, it has been a process filled with change. The change has been in physical terms as in bodily changes, in terms of geographical changes such as moving through about 4 countries, change in terms of role additions such as wife, daughter in law, sister in law, mother and emotional and spiritual changes. Each change brought with it positive transformations and some depressing moments. All these left their imprint on the way I function as an individual. At various transitions in my life I felt the need to introspect and reflect as well as seek some help and guidance to see myself through these.

As I travelled through various countries, it was not always possible to find someone I could talk to and took to keeping a journal. Old friends became sounding boards through the medium of telecalls or emails and chats. Hopefully this website helps all those kindred souls looking for information, expression or answers.
